Schedule a consult or virtual consultation with Dr. Hura.

Arjan Hura, M.D. is a board-certified and fellowship-trained refractive, cataract, and anterior segment surgeon at the Maloney-Shamie Vision Institute in Los Angeles, CA. He is passionate about providing the highest possible medical and surgical vision care to his patients and is committed to the American Academy of Ophthalmology‘s mission of protecting sight and empowering lives. His research and clinical interests include working with the latest cutting-edge technology to constantly try to improve patient outcomes and advance ophthalmology as a profession. He is actively involved with advocacy efforts to put patients first at the local, state, and national levels.

During his time in medical school, Arjan served as Co-Class President for four years and collaborated with the College of Medicine administration and his fellow classmates to implement a wide spread of positive changes that involved the medical school curriculum, interactions with industry, and safety on campus. He was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society, worked as a NIH-funded summer research fellow at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, and was involved in the medical school’s Neuroscience Scholars Program. Upon graduation, he received the Alumni Award, an honor selected by his medical school class for conceiving and implementing programs for the benefit of the entire student body during medical school.

During residency, Arjan had the privilege of training at the University of Cincinnati and under many world-renowned ophthalmologists at the Cincinnati Eye Institute, including Robert Osher, MD, Karl Golnik, MD, Edward Holland, MD, James Augsburger, MD, and Christopher Riemann, MD. He was involved in a number of clinical research studies and investigator initiated trials, presented every year at the national ARVO and ASCRS meetings, received a National Eye Institute (NEI) travel grant, was twice awarded Best Paper of Session (BPOS) at ASCRS 2019 and 2022, and was recognized as having one of the top three BPOS in the Cornea subsection at ASCRS 2019. During his chief year, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) honor society, received a Graduate Medical Trainee Award of Excellence on Doctors’ Day 2021, was a recipient of an ASCRS 2021 Resident Excellence Award, and was awarded the 2021 International Resident Leadership Award by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. On graduation, he was awarded the Alan and Karen Zalta Resident Research award for his research work in residency.

After residency, Arjan pursued a highly coveted sub-specialized fellowship, widely considered to be the best of its kind in the country, focusing on advanced refractive, cataract, and anterior segment surgery under world renowned surgeons, William Wiley, MD and Shamik Bafna, MD at the Cleveland Eye Clinic and Clear Choice Custom LASIK Center. During his time in Cleveland, he trained in the use of the latest cutting-edge vision correction technologies, was certified as the youngest EVO ICL surgeon in the state of Ohio, and was involved in numerous FDA clinical device trials for emerging novel therapeutics. He performed the most SMILE laser vision correction surgeries out of any fellow in the country and in total performed thousands of refractive cataract surgeries as well as SMILE, LASIK, and PRK laser vision correction procedures.

During his spare time in residency and fellowship, Arjan travelled across the country to observe different surgical techniques and hear perspectives from top refractive, cataract, and anterior segment surgeons. A supporter of global ophthalmology, he had the honor of serving in El Salvador on a mission trip with other surgeons from around the country to screen and treat corneal and external diseases in underserved areas.

Passionate about patient advocacy, he attended the AAO Mid-Year Forum during all four years of ophthalmology residency and fellowship, founded the Young Ophthalmology (YO) state section for the Ohio Ophthalmological Society (OOS), and served as an OOS resident board member. He currently serves on the AAO’s YO Advocacy Subcommittee as well as on the ASCRS Government Relations Committee.

Arjan has received numerous awards in clinical practice and has been recognized by various institutions, including: receiving the AAO Secretariat Award, being featured in Season Three of Rising Eye Stars, being named One To Watch, a Castle Connolly Rising Star, a Super Doctors Southern California Rising Star, a Los Angeles Top Doctor, and being listed on The Ophthalmologist’s Rising Star Power List.

KARATE

Arjan Hura began training in Shotokan karate in 1997 at the age of 7 under the late Sonny Kim at the Japanese Karate-Do dojo (Mid-America WTKO) in Cincinnati, Ohio. He received Shodan (first-degree black belt) from Sensei Kim after 6 years of training on December 6th, 2003.

After graduating from Sycamore High School in 2008, Arjan went to The Ohio State University for his undergraduate studies in Columbus, Ohio. There he trained with the OSU Shotokan Karate Club (ISKF) for 4 years. During his senior year on campus, Arjan helped lead the club, teaching all of the classes and preparing club members for regional/national tournament competition and belt testing.

Upon graduating from OSU, Arjan returned to Cincinnati to begin his medical education at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He continued to train at Japanese Karate-Do under Sensei Kim until his passing in June of 2015, after which Arjan helped propagate Sensei Kim’s legacy by instructing hybrid conditioning and advanced traditional budo karate classes on Saturday mornings.

Currently, Arjan practices in Los Angeles, California. He believes karate-ka must study, understand, and develop proper biomechanics in order to maximally generate powerful and efficient techniques. His emphasis is on constant self-analysis and training with intention, both in and out of the dojo, to facilitate continuous progression.
